Kite SurfingPrevailing winds are the NE trade winds. The season is from December through August. Typically on clear days the wind will pick up in the afternoon around 2 PM, sometimes a little earlier. The best place to kitesurf is Portillo, which has flat water because of the surrounding reef. The place also has a thermal effect which will make the wind around 2-3 knots stronger than in front of the house and comparable to Cabarete (but with a nicer scenery and without the crowds). The other beach is Punta Poppy, where you can find some beach bars, which are missing at Portillo. The only downside is the reef there. Please orientate yourself before heading out. When the wind is N-NE you can kitesurf about 300 m downwind from our house in front of the beach shack of Luis on Playa Coson. You can take off in front of the house and kite downwind to this excellent spot. In the winter there are nice waves.
Las Terrenas has two kitesurfing schools. We recommend Pura Vida, where you can also go for kite repairs. Click here for a video. You can reach them at ☎ (809) 964 7051, (809) 915 7750, puravidalt@hotmail.com
We have 4 boards (Skywalker, Aggression, 2 Litewaves) at the house and a Waroo (13, 15, 17m) and an RRD quiver (13, 16, 20m). Experienced kite surfers can use this equipment. SurfingThe best surf spot is in front of Luis with nice barrel waves. Beginners can surf in front of the Wyndham or at Playa Bonita. We have 3 surfboards at the house: a beginner’s board, a long board and a regular board. DivingThe Los Ballenas islands, which you can see from the house, is the destination for diving. We recommend Las Terrenas Divers at Hotel Las Ballenas, Playa Bonita. They offer lessons and beginners dives as well as advanced dives. The owner is Hanjo, who speaks German and English. He can be reached at ☎ (809) 889 2422, hanjog@gmx.net. Horseback RidingOur housekeepers can arrange horseback trips along the beach. GolfA golf course is being developed in town but it will take at least another year to finish. Meanwhile, at a 1.5 hours drive towards Puerto Plata is Playa Grande, considered among the best courses on the Caribbean.
This course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., on an area of more than 150 hectares (370 acres). 10 of the 18 holes are played along the sea cliffs, bays and overlooking gulfs. |
